1st Calne Scouts have proved to be one of the most environmentally friendly Groups in the UK by repeatedly hitting the top spots the Scouts Appeal league tables.
The Group, helped by donations from many local companies and green minded parents, send on average over ten boxes a month for recycling and earned a whopping £467 in the month of July coming second in the league table, only £21 behind the top group. 1st Calne Scouts also reached second place in the recycling league in March and May of this year, a fantastic achievement.
The funds raised from Scouts Appeal have helped towards double–glazing, replacing old electric heaters with Gas Central Heating, improved security for the Scout Hall and helped towards the replacement of the Scout Minibus. This form of fund raising helps relieve the pressure on the Group and its leaders, allowing them to continue to run a high quality programme for its 100+ members.
The Group is proud of its recycling efforts and has achieved its Environmental Award for every member! Simon Lonsdale, one of the assistant Scout Leaders said
“It is so easy to recycle using the Scouts Appeal and we have earned a large amount of money with it and so little effort. We also have stopped all that waste going in to the ground.”
The Group also collect and recycle aluminium cans which helps top up the Groups funds. The drink cans come from many sources with members from all sections collecting them and they are helped out with 3 local pubs/clubs providing us with their empty cans. The Scout Group have planted some new trees last year at three locations in Calne. The company who recycle the Aluminium drink cans donated the trees to the group.
