Story Picture Recycling Pays Off for Doncaster Scout Group

The saying one man’s rubbish is another’s treasure certainly rings true for Doncaster’s Phoenix Explorer Scouts who have raised an amazing £13,000 over the last five years just by recycling unwanted items.  The group participates in Scouts Appeal which recycles old mobile phones and used printer cartridges for cash.  In fact the Doncaster group are so good at getting people to go green they even won the appeal’s quarterly competition for collecting the most cartridges and phones.  Their prize is a £500 voucher towards a fantastic Venture Abroad holiday.

Group leader Kevin Welborn explains how their appeal has grown over the years:

“When we first started off, we had just one company, EWS Railway in Doncaster who supplied us with a few cartridges every month.  We now have three companies sending us their cartridges and numerous individuals dropping off smaller numbers. If asked, we call and collect.”

Not only do the Doncaster community’s recycling efforts raise vital funds for Tickhill Scouts and the Explorer Unit, they also benefit our environment.  When old phones and cartridges are thrown in the bin they end up in landfill sites where they can result in serious damage to our environment.  The toxic substances they contain can leak into the surrounding soil causing pollution and damaging plant and wildlife.  There is also trouble at the top of the site where decomposing waste produces the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane; so the less waste we put in landfill the better it is for climate change.
