A Hull Scout group, St. Martin’s, is calling on local businesses to help them raise money for the group through the Scouts Recycling Appeal with Redeem Plc. The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts of St. Martin’s have been busy encouraging friends, family and local businesses to donate their old mobile phones and printer cartridges to help them raise vital funds for the group.
St. Martin’s Scouts have been recycling with Redeem since last year and are urging more people to get involved with their recycling campaign. The cash raised through the recycling initiative will go towards sending the scout section of the group to ‘Poacher 2008’, an International Scout and Guide camp held in Lincolnshire at the end of July.
Joe Hunter, a Young Leader said “The Scouts Appeal is a great way to raise funds and we are putting the money we raise towards Poacher International 2008. We’re all really looking forward to the event as it gives us the opportunity to experience challenge and adventure for a whole week. Over 3000 young people will be participating in the event from around the world, making ‘Poacher’ a phenomenal international gathering that some Scouts will only be lucky enough to experience once in their Scouting life. The scale of Poacher means it only comes around every four years because it takes that long to organize.
As well as helping us to raise money, the recycling scheme that Redeem runs for youth groups is also a great way to teach youngsters about the importance of disposing of such items in an environmentally friendly way whilst educating them on citizenship.
Once the disused mobiles and printer cartridges are handed in, Redeem then converts the disused items into monies that help fund the groups’ effort.”
Jamie Rae, chief executive of Redeem, commented “The Scouts Appeal is a worthwhile and rewarding fundraising and recycling programme for Scout Groups across the UK. Groups are able to earn cash for every reusable mobile phone, PDA and empty printer cartridge recycled whilst saving lots of toxic waste from going to landfill and damaging the environment. The more groups are able to collect, the more cash they can raise for great causes such as this one.”
Joe adds “Our top tips for other groups wishing to fundraise through this initiative would be to simply spread the word by using the resources provided by Redeem and get a collection box set up at your meeting place. We have managed to get collection boxes at community meeting places and local shops in the area which makes it easier for people to donate their unwanted mobile phones and printer cartridges and ultimately helps us reach or target.”
